SCARY NIGHTS ~ HANDCRAFTED TEE

SCARY NIGHTS is a one-of-a-kind oversized tee creation that I fully handcrafted, featuring my design “Pretty Little Nightmares” hand-painted on the back.

It’s genderless, oversized, grunge, and alternative; nothing less than a statement piece!

Created with 100% cotton fabric made in Japan and inspired by pop art, cartoon monsters, Harajuku’s kawaii monster café’s unicorn (closed down during covid), and the cheshire cat’s tail from Alice in wonderland, giving an intense and creepy-cute aesthetic.

To complement this piece, pair it with one of my jewelry creations, like SPYKE, designed to match its oversized cut.

It took me a month to create, evolving through drawing, designing, pattern-making, sewing, and hand-painting.

SCARY NIGHTS is an artwork and comes with a certificate of authenticity, featuring your name, date, and unique code for this creation.

Each creation is a form of self-expression, born from intense emotions, chaos, healing, and resilience.

This one represents a two years struggle with panic attacks after an emotionally traumatic event.

Every night, dreams or nightmares; it didn’t matter, I was waking up in fear and tears, my heart beating abnormally fast, out of breath, not understanding where I was, lost on what was real or not for a few seconds. My body would go straight into panic.

As those dreams or nightmares were vivid ones, I had the feeling everything was real, was happening in real time, giving the sensation that I could touch, smell, or hear everything in them.
They were exceptionally clear, intense, or frightening dream experiences driven by emotional stress, fragmented sleep, and changes in brain activity during REM sleep.

Initially, these vivid dreams and nightmares centered on the same individual. However, after eighteen months, they shifted to random scenarios involving people I barely knew, making the experience even more terrifying.
The breaking point was a horrifying nightmare where I was assaulted by a housemate in my share-house; I woke up screaming, in pure terror.

That’s when I forced myself to cope.

While I am not a medical professional, these methods helped me through the chaos. If you are enduring this alone, please reach out to a specialist; especially if your nights are as relentless as mine were. You deserve support.

- Prior to trying to fall back asleep, make sure to completely awaken both your mind and body.
- Reconnect with the present through grounding: identify five distinct things you can see, feel, or scent. If you are by yourself, offer yourself a physical embrace to signal that you are in a safe space.
- Hydrate, move your limbs, and focus on your breath. Go for a walk if possible. Avoid digital distractions such as social media. Screen time is not your friend in this case and might not help.

Personally, I believe it is preferable to avoid returning to sleep following an episode, even in the middle of the night.

The thing that helped me the most, but that took a while, was to recognize quickly that I just woke up, that it was a dream/nightmare, and therefore not to cry. I forced myself not to cry, as crying made it ten times more painful and longer to ground myself in reality.
It was so often, that after two years, my brain could in less than five seconds putting me back in reality, despite my heart betting like crazy.
Now it happens maybe once a year or less.

SCARY NIGHTS is a reminder that it's okay to ask for help, that there is hope and better days!

Through MISFITKID, I hope to raise mental health awareness and create space for those who never fit in, feel misunderstood, lonely, and unseen.
